Belonging is Sharing is Belonging is Including

Abstract

This conversation with Nikos Ziaziaris and Chrysi Kyratsou discusses the contributions comprising this Thematic Issue on ‘Music Education among Refugee and Migrant Youths: Sharing, Belonging, Including’. Availing of the unique perspectives that experience in performance, music teaching to migrant youths, and research in music education among migrant youths offer,this interview concludes the discussion developed throughout the contributions of this TI. It foregrounds the conditions under which music education can have a transformative role for the lives of refugee and migrant youths (as well as the teachers and co facilitators involved in this process). Furthermore, it argues for the integral interconnection between belonging, sharing and including, explaining how each concept serves as pre-requirement for facilitating an inclusive music lesson. The interview further reflects on the conditions in which in-group music learning -and making- can amplify processes of including, senses of belonging, and practices of sharing. At the core of this process is the music educator, as a meticulous and respectful listener; committed to tackling learning barriers and navigating any challenges as a facilitator of the learning experience.
